allowable loss

one step beyond invisible

they collect under the city

in the damp, gray wasteland

it is their way

skittering like roaches

in the flash of light

from an opened manhole

the colony of shadow figures

disperses with mute resignation

wraiths in layers of dinge

no longer recognizable as clothing

dodge puddles of slime

hands ringed with grime

civilization disappearing

as flesh tones dim

squinty eyes glowing yellow

in the cavernous recesses

of decaying infrastructure
