A big congratulations to the ProStart students
from the Hospitality/Culinary class. Both the
Culinary and Management teams won the State
competition yesterday in Cedar Falls and are
headed for the National ProStart Invitational in
San Diego, California in April. The culinary
team is Marcus Brandt, Kelsey Daufeldt,
Hollee DeSpain, and Teresa Foster.
The Management team is Kelsey Daufeldt,
Hollee Despain, Dorian Potter, and
Erin Waters. Great Job!! |

Nancy Weibel, student at Central High
School, has her poetry featured in a special
mural designed by multiple artists from Quad
City Arts. The Metro Arts Mural 2007 project was
designed to showcase our area's river-based
history. Shown is a section of the mural which
features Nancy's poem. |

On Saturday, January 5, 2008 Davenport Community
School District’s intermediate and high school
band students traveled to Fairfield, Iowa to
audition for the Southeast Iowa Intermediate
and High School Honor Bands. The student
audition consists of prepared etudes and 10
scales.
The Southeast Iowa Honor Band will be held at
Iowa City West High School on Saturday, January
19th—the Intermediate band performance at 5:00
P.M. and the high school band performance at
6:00 P.M.
The 36 students from the Davenport Community
School District selected for this honor are:

North High School—Jessica Wakefield, bass

This fall, the Orange Crush Marching band from
Sudlow Intermediate, under the direction
of Alan Guss and Terry Reiter,
traveled to Anamosa, IA for the Anamosa Pumpkin
Festival. The Orange Crush Marching band also
performed in the Davenport Community Schools
Band Spectacular and at the Davenport Halloween
Parade where they were awarded "Best Band" of
all the intermediates involved. The picture is

The Sudlow Intermediate Band program had
13 students audition for the Southeast Iowa
Bandmasters Association (SEIBA) Honor Band
on Saturday, January 5, 2007. 11 of the students
were chosen to represent Sudlow Intermediate at
the SEIBA Honor Band performance to be held in
Iowa City West High School. Robin Ciccotelli,
Alan Guss, and Terry Reiter are the band
directors directors. 8th grade students selected
are: Becky Hixon, Clarinet; Austin Overmann,
tenor saxophone; Grant Albansoder, percussion;
Lindsey Schmalfeldt, percussion; Ethan Svoboda,
percussion; Dominick Shults, trombone; Michael
Goodyear, oboe; 7th grade students selected are
Brittnee Dillard, clarinet; Stephanie Zeidler,
clarinet; Brennen Slater, alto saxophone; Kylie
Jansen, percussion .
Becky Hixon and Austin Overmann were selected
through the audition process to represent Sudlow
at the Iowa Bandmasters Association 8th grade
all Iowa honor band to be held in Des Moines
during the Iowa Bandmasters Association
Convention in May 2008. This is the highest
honor an 8th grade instrumentalist can receive
in their middle school career. |

The Seven Blue Team at Williams decided
to help one of the featured families in the
QC Times Wish List, which needed to purchase
new beds and bedding. With the motto: “Help
Grant a Families’ Wishes and A Teacher Will Give
A Pig Kisses”, donations came in daily from the
over one hundred students on the Seven Blue
Team. On Tuesday, December 18, 2007, at a
ceremony in which the United Way staff was
presented with over $400 in donations for this
Wish List Project, Mr. Byrd, the 7Blue
Team teacher with the most student votes
dutifully kissed Corky the pig. A last minute
collection was given by the students in an
effort to encourage Principal McKissick
to also kiss the pig. He answered this community
call to duty and gave Corky her second smooch of
the day. |

from Central High School, was just
selected by "Technology and Learning"
magazine for the best digitally-enhanced photo
and will receive Adobe Photoshop CS3 as her
prize. This is the highest honor (and she is the
only one awarded such) in this national level
competition. |

The Business Academy students at West
High held a fund drive late in November for
the Coats for Kids program and raised
$440 during lunches over three days and
collected 14 coats! The donated funds will be
used to cover the cost of cleaning gently used
coats which have been donated by community
members to the Coats for Kids program. This
year, the program expects to distribute close to
1200 coats to area school children. |

School Youth Congress are pictured here at

traveled to Des Moines earlier this month to
meet with legislators and experience the process

High, Zsalanda Dixon and Amanda Cadena,
also took part in Youth Congress activities. |

Mark Lazio, student at Central High
School, recently participated in The
World Food Prize's 2007 Global Youth Institute.
For Mark, this meant presenting his research
paper on the subject of "Biofuels: Promises and
Implications for Food Security in Developing
Countries". Mark chose to do his research on the
farming industry in rural China. (Mark is the
third student from the right in the back row.) |

Hailey Nichol, Davenport West's
Homecoming Queen, has been one of 900 Homecoming
Queens out of 44,000 applicants to be invited to
participate in this year's Liberty Bowl
festivities and game. |

On October 13th, Central hosted the
State Marching Band Festival at Brady
Stadium. Some 21 bands and over 1,700 students
performed for one of the largest crowds in
memory! The bands are judged on 4
categories---music execution, marching
execution, music general effect and marching
general effect.
Our three Davenport high school bands----Central,
North and West---- had truly
outstanding performances and all received a
Division I rating! CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR VERY
TALENTED AND HARD WORKING STUDENTS AND
INSTRUMENTAL DIRECTORS! |

Students at Eisenhower Elementary
participated in the Earth Summit event -
making musical shakers to add to the
festivities.
The students had creative fun with the project
and were proud to be a part of the event. Art
Instructor Stacey Houk also poses with a

Students from Central High School have
earned recognition from the College Board for
the their exceptional achievement on the
college-level Advanced Placement program (AP)
exams.
Ashley Peterson was designated an AP
Scholar with Distinction; Brendan Chambers was
designated an AP Scholar with Honor award
winner; and Eric Anderson, Jason Davis,
Brian Higdon and Joel McCalebb all
received the State AP Scholar award for their
efforts. The students took the exams in May of
2007. |

Olivia Schroeder, kindergarten student at
Wilson, won a laptop in the Smiles in
Education promotion form HyVee. She won a laptop
and Wilson school won $5000. Thank you HyVee!!! |

West High recently unveiled a new set of
science labs at their building. The $1.2 million
project (funded through the Local Option Sales
and Services Tax) featured new cabinets, floors,
wiring, storage, lighting, limited air
conditioning, and improved technical
capabilities. |

Brian Higdon and Stephen Quist,
students at Central High School and
Lisa Brus, student at West High School
have been named semifinalists in the 53nd annual
National Merit Scholarship program. They
now join 16,000 other high school students from
across the country in the opportunity to
continue in the competition for some 8,200 Merit
Scholarship awards, worth $34 million, that will
be offered next spring. |

The Sudlow Intermediate Treble Choir,
under the direction of Diane Carius, was
recently named the recipient of the Grand
Sweepstakes Award from the Music Showcase
Festivals. The award is given to the highest
scoring ensemble of each level participating in
the competition which was held at 6 Flags Great
America. |

Jason White, a student at North High,
attended Boy's State this past summer and was
elected Governor. This is the first time in 20
years that the Governor of Boy's State has been
from this area. American Legion Boys State is
among the most respected and selective
educational programs of government instruction
for high school students. Congratulations Jason! |

Students at Kimberly Center East made
significant gains on their ITED scores this
year. All students who scored in the 'meets'
category and/or who improved their core by ten
points had their names entered in a drawing to
win a free lunch at Thunder Bay Grill and a ride
to lunch provided by Custom Limousine. The lucky
winners had a great time. More importantly, the
staff at KCAE was proud of all of their students
for their efforts on the ITED. During testing,
other incentive items were donated by: YMCA,
Culvers, Checkers, Bubble Tea/Slanted Straw,
Miller Time Bowling, Dairy Queen, Red Lobster,
Krispy Crème, Chick-fil-A, Long John Silvers/A &
W, Family Video and Bowlmor Lanes. Thanks to all
of these businesses. |

Forty Business Career Academy students from
West High received the President's
Volunteer Service Award on June 5th at the
school. Iowa State Senator Joe Seng
awarded the presidential medals to each student.
The Business Career Academy students and staff
volunteered 7,934 hours in the Quad City Area
last year demonstrating citizenship, selfless
service, and responsibility to America. |

On May 18th, 2007 Walcott Elementary
celebrated literacy with a Breakfast with
Books.
Students K-5 and their mothers, father,
guardians, grandpas, grandmas, aunts, uncles
and friends shared breakfast, signed up for the
Summer Reading Program sponsored by
the Walcott Public Library, received a new book
of their own and visited the computer
lab to learn about the new Treasures’ Reading
and Language Arts Program. There
was also a book swap for Walcott students.
Students brought in slightly used books
and each student got to choose ten book swap
books to take home to read for the summer! |

A big thank you goes out to the following Central
Army JROTC Cadets for their participation in
Saturdays Armed Forces day event at Brady
stadium. Rebecca Smet, Ryan Wilson,
Robert Robbins, Kimberly Kirk,
Nick Bernhardt, Josh Conder, and
Sara Nguyen displayed a great deal of
professionalism and were recognized by the event
coordinator. These cadets gave up a big part of
their day to honor our Armed forces. |

A huge congratulation goes out to the Central
Army JROTC Raider team who finished second
at the Iron Cadet championships in
Waterloo earlier in May. The team members of
Ryan Wilson, Josh Conder, Matt
Hamerly, Adam Nguyen, and Nick
Watson worked through 22 different events
that included two 4 mile runs, an obstacle
course, log pushups, log sit ups, and many other
activities. |

The Wood Intermediate Select 7-8 Grade
Concert Choir took First Place Division A
schools at the Music In The Parks Festival
held Saturday, May 12 in Chicago, IL. The choir
competed with 28 other ensembles from 9 states.
The Wood students competed at Warren Township
High School then spent the remaining afternoon
at Six Flags Great America culminating with an
awards ceremony before returning to Davenport
that evening. |

Williams’ 8th grader Lindsay O’Keefe,
inventor of the “Mobile Coat;" two students from
Walcott Intermediate, Kari Moeller
and Savanna Bramstedt, 7th graders,
inventors of the "The Putter Outer" (a device
that automatically puts out your candle after a
certain length of time) and Adams 5th
grader, Elizabeth Moler, inventor of the
"Baby Mate" have all received notification from
the directors of the Iowa State Invention
Convention that they have each won a $50.00
savings bond for their invention presentation
last month at Iowa State University in Ames,
Iowa.

Groups of students from JB Young - as
well as parents, staff and other volunteers -
have been working with United Neighbors
to maintain and improve a small 'pocket park' at
13th and LeClaire for the past two years. The
project has included clean up, mulching,
plantings - and a new sign dedicating the park
to Doug Bumann, a former resident of the
neighborhood. Ongoing funding for the project
has been provided by the Riverboat
Development Authority.

Two Davenport West High School students
have won three awards in the American Society of
Newspaper Editors/Quill and Scroll 2007
International Writing and Photography Contest.
Mark Schwenker (pictured left) a junior,
won two national gold key awards in the In-depth
Reporting/Individual category for his stories
titled “Where Your Money Goes” and “The
Unaccepted.” He is the Focus editor of the Beak
‘n’ Eye school newspaper.Tyler Lesthaeghe
(pictured right), a senior, won a gold key
in the News-Feature Photography category for a
photo titled “Skybridge at Night.” He is the
editor-in-chief of the Beak ’n’ Eye. |

The 8th Annual Sixth Grade Battle of the
Books culminated in the district finals
April 26. Eleven teams (50 students total) from
the six intermediate schools met to compete.
They were the building winning teams as about
200 students began reading books for this
project in December. Results:
- First place: JB Young Team of
Meghan Essary, Jackie Howard,
Anesa Lovedy – Teacher: Michelle Wulf.
- Tied for second place: The 'GIR Squad'
from Williams: Preston Eisenhauer,

publications students who placed individually in
national competition in Denver: Junior Jessi
VandenBerg received a an Excellent in
Newspaper Sports writing; Junior Kelsey
Howard received an Excellent in Academic
Yearbook Writing; Junior David Whalen
received an Excellent in News and Feature
Newspaper Photography; Junior Jessica Seier
received an Excellent in Two Weeks Photo
Portfolio; Sophomore Jonathan Welser
received an Honorable Mention in Advertising;
and Freshman Ellen Schwartz received an
Honorable Mention in Video Commentary.
Central also received one of five Press
Freedom Awards given in the nation and was
the first recipient of the National Diversity
Award. Senior Eric Anderson was
notified that he is a national winner in the
International Quill & Scroll Newspaper Writing
Contest. He will receive a gold key for
editorial writing. |

An Huynh, daughter of Phung Nguyen and
Phuoc Huynh, and a senior student at West
High School, has been awarded the
prestigious Dr. Thomas Anthony Dooley
Memorial Scholarship for 2007. Dr. Walter
Neiswanger, scholarship benefactor,
presented the scholarship which is for students
