HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS PARTICIPATE IN AN ‘ACADEMIC
BOWL’
Students from North, Central
and West High School will participate in a
demonstration “Academic Bowl” event on Monday, May 2nd,
at 7:30 p.m. in Paul Holzworth Auditorium at North
High. Based on the once popular “College Bowl” TV
show and competition, the Academic Bowl features a
“Jeopardy” like format where teams compete against
each other in correctly answering a wide variety of
scholastic questions.
There will be toss up
questions, buzzers and bonus questions as two teams
of five vie to be the first AND the most accurate at
answering questions. The May 2nd event
is just a demonstration, although the three high
schools all have the equipment and materials
required to gear up for the real thing. Teams at
each school have been practicing and becoming
familiar with the process.
According to Dave Dix, Director
of the Great Minds program of the Davenport Schools,
the Academic Bowl is a fun and challenging way to
focus on the academic achievement of our students.
“It’s once again gaining in popularity and provides
a wonderful way to showcase the skills and knowledge
of our students,” he explains.
He adds that there are other
schools in the area who currently participate in the
Academic Bowl, leading to the possibility of future
cross-district competition.
Advisors for the Academic Bowl include Gail
Heininger from Central, Mike Marshall at North and
Jay Swords at West.
