TRUMAN MEDIA SPECIALIST WINS THE GLASS APPLE
AWARD
Sue Ferrell, Library Media
Specialist at Truman Elementary School, will be
honored at a special recognition this Friday, at
1:30 p.m. at Truman, when Iowa First Lady Christie
Vilsack personally presents her with a Glass Apple
Award for her achievement as a teacher-librarian.
An initiative of the Iowa
Stories 2000 Foundation, the Glass Apple Award
focuses on the important contribution media
specialists/teacher-librarians make to the literacy
skills of Iowa’s children. Mrs. Ferrell was one of
the first library media specialists to be hired in
the Davenport district and as been an educator for
more than 40 years. “She has positively impacted
many, many students, teachers and community
members”, notes Ken Krumwiede, principal at Truman.
According to Mrs. Vilsack,
teacher librarians are the keystone of every
school’s curriculum because they help students and
teachers learn how to use books and technology in an
effective way. “These remarkable people devote
their energy, time and talents to helping students
find, evaluate and use information,” she adds.
Glass Apple awards are being presented to 12 library
media specialists from throughout the state.
