Davenport Community Schools Hosts Iowa
Legislator’s
Presentation on School Funding Issues
Iowa State Representative Ed
Fallon (D-Des Moines) will stop in Davenport on
Friday, January 9, at 3 p.m. in the Jim Hester Board
Room of the Administration Services Center of the
Davenport Community Schools, 1606 Brady Street, as
part of his 99-county tour to build support for
increased state funding of education in Iowa.
Board members and staff of the
Davenport Community Schools – as well as parents and
interested community members – are invited to attend
Fallon’s presentation.
He is proposing to shift $41
million from the Iowa Values Fund to Iowa’s schools,
improving the state’s funding for K-12 and higher
education. The bill is co-sponsored by Rep. Scott
Raecker (R-Urbandale). As a result of the recent
2.5% across-the-board-budget cut, K-12 education
lost $48 million in funding earlier this year.
Such cuts have an immediate impact on school
districts throughout the state – often resulting in
reduced services or increased program restrictions;
including such significant steps as potential school
closures, school district consolidations and staff
reductions.
