HOTDOGS AND BACKPACKS – A GOOD COMBINATION FOR
BACK TO SCHOOL
Recognizing that back to school
is an important transition for all middle grades
students – especially the new incoming 6th
graders – Wood Intermediate and JB Young
Intermediate are planning special “Unpack Your
Backpack” Family nights to welcome their students
back to school.
Both events will be held this
Thursday, August 26, from 5 to 7 p.m.
and feature cookouts, building tours, the chance to
meet school staff and an opportunity for students to
find their lockers and unpack their backpacks. All
of this is designed not only to help kids be ready
to go on the first day of school, but to involve
families at the outset of the school year. All
students at Young will also receive student spirit
t-shirts to celebrate a new beginning at their
school following a $6.8 million renovation project.
Parent involvement is critical
to a student’s success in school, agree Marianne
Corbin, principal at Young, and Rick Herrig,
principal at Wood. The district is putting a strong
focus on middle grade education this year, exploring
ways to strengthen academic achievement and enhance
building climate. “This will take a true
partnership between school and home,” says Ms.
Corbin. “We’ll be working to support students with
engaging curriculum and a staff that’s really
committed to a great year here at JB.” Mr. Herrig
agrees. “We appreciate the important role parents
play in supporting their students, and we want both
students and their parents to know that Wood can be
a family,” he adds.
Although all families are encouraged to
attend these events, both principals acknowledge
that such transition activities are especially
important for incoming 6th graders. Unpack Your
Backpack events help these students feel more
comfortable in the building, give them a chance to
meet staff and classmates, and build some early
connections.
