Hunger Drive!

21st annual Student Hunger Drive

Central High School joins twenty-two other Quad Cities high schools in the fight against hunger. Many events contribute to Central’s collection of canned goods that are delivered on November 8 to the River Bend Foodbank.

Hunger Drive T-shirts are available to all for $5 each. Come to room 343 to purchase yours. Lunch Mania ,the week of October 23, included a sucker tree, paper chains, guess-the-number-of-M and M’s-in-a-jar, and tape-a-teacher-to-the-wall.

This year’s Silent Auction was held at the wonderful downtown River Music Experience on October 4. A record number of items were donated by supportive individuals and businesses, all of whom are listed on the CHS web site. “Just Friends” provided live entertainment that kept bidders’ toes tapping throughout the evening.

Seven candidates participated in Mr. Blue Devil 2006, a spoof on beauty pageants. Karl Baresel, Paul Baresel, Bryan Pearson, T.J. Pearson, Cody Tucker, Mr. Will Bradford, and Mr. Sam Kresse strutted their stuff in evening wear and swim wear categories, answered three questions in the knowledge category, and demonstrated their considerable talent. Judges this year were our lovely lunch ladies, costumed as nuns. A raucous good time was had by the contestants, the judges, and the audience. The “round mound of sound” Mr. Will Bradford is Mr. Blue Devil 2006.

On Thursday, November 2, all students will have the opportunity to pay $1 to leave fourth block early and attend the finals of the Central Idol competition. From a field of eighteen talented students, a panel of students and music teachers selected four finalists. These four finalists will perform for their peers in the gymnasium at 2:00 p.m.

On Tuesday, November 7, at 2:00 p.m. in the gymnasium, teams of five join in a messy spaghetti-eating competition. Students and parents can buy a ticket for $1 to watch the hilarity.

All money earned in all activities is used to purchase canned goods. Each of the twenty-three schools competes in the pounds-per-student competition. Central High School is in the large-school division. On November 9, stay tuned to the media for the announcement of the 2006 winners.
