Job Shadow
What is a Job Shadow?
- A job shadow is a learning experience that takes place at a place of employment in the community. It usually lasts one day for three to six hours.
- During a job shadow, you accompany a career host during a typical day and observe and ask questions about his or her work.
Goals
- Understand the connection between school, work, and your goals for the future.
- Learn as much as possible watching, listening, and asking good questions while observing a daily routine of workers in the field.
- Make realistic decisions about your future.
- Learn first hand information about a career field, its characteristics, and requirements.
- Learn about the academic, technical, and personal skills required by a particular career.
- Encourage you to remain in school until you have the skills required to enter the job market or pursue post-secondary options.
Who may participate?
- High school students (grades 9-12) in the Davenport Community School District may request the opportunity to do a job shadow.
- A teacher or counselor must recommend the student for the experience. They will the receive a job shadow packet of information.
- A "Parent/Guardian Permission and Release" form must be signed before being assigned a job shadow location.
- Each student is responsible for his/her own transportation to and from the shadow site.
