Hall of Honor Recipient
All I ever wanted to be was a doctor,
says Dr. John Sunderbruch, the dean of Davenport physicians.
Nearing 80, he has no intentions of retiring. He established
Davenports first neighborhood clinic, and despite the hectic
life of a general practitioner, found time to serve his city. He
has been president of CASI, the Assumption School Board and
co-chairman of a school financial drive that eventually saw an
auditorium named in his honor. He was president of the Friendly House,
the Chamber of Commerce, and once even ran for mayor of Davenport.
His philosophy is: If you cant make the
world better than it was when you came in, whats the use of
living? He has delivered enough babies to populate a small city.
Particularly he remembers performing
Davenports first open-heart surgery back in 1949 when the
procedure was almost unknown. It was an emergency and he had
never done it before-and the woman, believed to be dead, lived another
35 years.
Dr. Sunderbruch lives in Davenport.
