Hall of Honor Recipient

Elizabeth Moeller Rochow
Class of 1924
Inducted in 1992

    Elizabeth Moeller Geiken (Mrs. Martin H.) Rochow has been recognized as the key individual in the establishment of high standards associated with The Davenport Museum of Art. She received her BA and MS degrees from the University of Iowa, 1928-1931, and later attended the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts.

    The honoree’s illustrious career included a Research Fellowship from the Laura Spelman Rockefeller Foundation and the Iowa Child Welfare Research Station, 1929-31. She became Director of Art at the Francis Shimer Junior College in 1931 and the Instructor in Art and Art Supervisor, University of Montana, Dillon, 1934-36.In 1938 Rochow became Director of Davenport’s Municipal Art Gallery and was a part-time instructor at Augustana College, Rock Island during this period.

    Elizabeth Rochow was recognized nationally in “Who’s Who in American Art, “ (1938) and in “Who’s Who in America,” (1958).St. Ambrose College recognized Rochow in 1967.Memberships included the Iowa Museum Association and Delta Kappa Gamma, a Society for Women Educators.

    Mrs. Rochow’s roots in the Quad-Cities were strong.  She was largely responsible for obtaining the extensive Grant Wood Collection currently housed in the Museum. In addition she worked to get a Grant Wood stamp commemorating his 100th birthday. Her deep interest in community preservation involved efforts to return the Bix Beiderbeck piano to this area.
