Hall of Honor Recipient

Philip D. Adler
Class of 1922
Inducted in 1989

A letter of nomination to the Hall of Honor called him “one of the finest citizens Davenport ever produced.”  He was a philanthropist, scholar and civic leader.  Davenport’s Adler Theatre bears his name.  As president of Lee Enterprises, Inc., he pulled together what became one of the major media corporations in the United states.  He was publisher of the Times-Democrat, a director of the Inland Daily Press Association and chosen a Master Publisher by the Iowa Press Association.   Adler headed a wide range of organizations, from the former Davenport Municipal Art Gallery (now the Museum of Art) and the friendly House to the University of Iowa Foundation.  He served as a trustee for hospitals and colleges and was Davenport’s Man of the Year.  The University of Iowa chose him for its Journalism Hall of Fame.
