Music Courses

Fundamentals of Music (114111/114112) This course is offered for the student who has a serious interest in music. Included in the course will be an emphasis on basic theory, history, ear training, compositions and listening. The signature of the band, orchestra or vocal director is required.

INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC

Uniform: Certain items of apparel must be furnished by the individual student. Students using a school owned instrument will be assessed an annual repair/maintenance fee of $30.00.

Band (112101/112102) The approval of the band director is required in order to enroll in Band. Five periods a week plus one lesson period per week. Students are required to be in attendance at 6:50 a.m. during the marching season at West High only.

Orchestra (112401/112402) Orchestra instructor’s approval required. Five periods per week plus one lesson period per week.

Orchestra Winds (112451/112452) Two periods per week. Orchestra Winds can be scheduled the same period as physical education using one class period to accommodate both classes (two sessions of each per week.) Orchestra director’s approval required.

VOCAL MUSIC

Mixed Chorus and Mixed Chorus II are open to students without a tryout. If this kind of schedule is arranged, the student need not use separate periods for these classes. Ensembles are provided for students who are particularly interested in receiving individual attention in solo or small group experience. These courses are Show Choir and Chamber Choir. All students are encouraged to audition for the annual “Musical” and the annual “Variety Show.” Students enrolled may be required to purchase performance apparel and/or pay a uniform rental fee.

Limited opportunities exist for solo or small ensemble instruction. Weekly lessons will be offered on the basis of available instructional time. Signature of the vocal instructor is required. A copy of the selection criteria form is available from the instructor. No credit is granted for this instruction. Students receiving individual or ensemble instruction must be enrolled in a vocal music department course.Requirement for enrollment in any of the Vocal Music Classes: Attendance at performances of the group the student is enrolled in is required, unless waived by instructor.

Mixed Chorus I (113001/113002) Attention is given to the singing of basic multiple-part choral literature, and development of voice. Students participate in a variety of concert activities, both in the school setting and the community. The class meets five periods per week.

Mixed Chorus II (113041/113042) Attention is given to the singing of basic multiple-part choral literature, and development of the voice. Students participate in a variety of concert activities, both in the school setting and the community. Class meets opposite physical education.

aCapella (113051/113052) Open by audition only. Advanced choral development is the central focus of this course. Frequent performances in the school and community are planned. In addition, participation in state sponsored music events and festivals is expected. Class meets five periods per week. Certain items of required apparel must be furnished by the student.

Show Choir (113101/113102) Open by audition only. This group specializes in the singing of music arrangements in the pop music style, including vocal jazz, and uses choreographed movement. Frequent concerts in the school and community will be planned. Meets three times weekly. Certain items of apparel must be furnished by the student.

Chamber Singers (113141/113142) this group specializes in multiple part arrangements from standard choral literature including madrigals of the 16th and 17th centuries. Concerts in the school and community will be planned.
